Historical Evolution of Asian College of Hong Kong
Nanyang Heritage (1898-1941)
The institution traces its origins back to Penang Mingde Academy, established in 1898 (Guangxu 24th year) by Nanyang Chinese leaders Huang Naishang and Zhang Bishi in George Town, British Malaya. With the mission of “Preserving Chinese Civilization Overseas,” the academy initially offered courses in classical Chinese studies, Malay language, navigation and cartography, and rubber plantation management. A surviving inscription by Kang Youwei, who took refuge in Nanyang in 1899, bearing the words “Seek the Lost Rites in the Wilderness”, serves as a historical testimony to the academy’s founding. In 1905, the academy introduced a “Nanyang Overseas Chinese Teacher Training Program”, producing the first generation of local educators for Chinese schools in Southeast Asia.
Wartime Relocation (1942-1946)
With the outbreak of the Pacific War, just before the fall of Penang in 1942, then-Principal Chen Yusong (later a renowned Nanyang historian) led faculty and students in a daring evacuation aboard the Dutch cargo ship Van Riebeeck, carrying rare literary collections, including the Supplementary Edition of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries. En route, they joined forces with scholars from the exiled Southwest Associated University, forming the Wartime Nanyang Academic Consortium. Unfortunately, an air raid over Yangon in 1945 destroyed nearly one-third of the academy’s valuable archives, with the 1946 “Post-War Catalogue” still documenting lost manuscripts, including Wang Guowei’s annotated edition of Shui Jing Zhu (Commentary on the Water Classic).
Resurgence in Hong Kong (1947-1997)
In 1947, led by alumni Lee Kong Chian (founder of the Lee Foundation, Singapore) and Zheng Hongnian (former President of Jinan University), the Nanyang Chinese community acquired land in Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong, to rebuild the institution as the Nanyang College of Arts and Sciences. The newly established institution initially offered courses in Overseas Chinese History, Tropical Agriculture, and Maritime Trade. In 1955, it founded the Southeast Asian Revolutionary Archives, preserving historical records such as the Vietnamese Communist Party’s South China branch documents and directives from Burma’s Anti-Fascist League. In 1983, the college collaborated with prestigious Hong Kong universities to launch the “Overseas Chinese Capital and Special Economic Zone Economy” research project, providing key insights for attracting overseas Chinese investments during the early years of China’s economic reform.
A New Chapter in Asia (2023 - Present)
In 2023, spearheaded by its alumni association and officially approved by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the institution was rebranded as Asian Academy of Hong Kong (ACHK). The college integrates its century-old Nanyang academic heritage with Hong Kong’s strategic positioning to deliver world-class vocational education. The motto “Preserve Tradition, Embrace Change” is derived from the founding principles of the academy and an inscription by renowned scholar Qian Mu. ACHK is committed to nurturing highly skilled professionals across various disciplines.
